“Born of the Spirit”

The phrase “born of the Spirit” comes from a conversation that Jesus had with a man named Nicodemus, as recorded in the Gospel of John in the New Testament of the Bible. Jesus told Nicodemus that in order to see the kingdom of God, a person must be “born again” or “born from above.” Nicodemus was confused by this statement, and asked how it was possible for a person to be born again when they were already old.

Jesus clarified that he was not talking about a physical rebirth, but a spiritual one. He said, “Unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God” (John 3:5). Jesus was referring to a spiritual rebirth, in which a person’s heart and soul are transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit.

To be born of the Spirit means to have a personal encounter with God through the Holy Spirit, which leads to a profound spiritual transformation. It involves a deepening of faith, a turning away from sin, and a new way of living in relationship with God and others. It is a spiritual awakening that enables a person to see and understand the things of God in a new way, and to experience a sense of peace and purpose that transcends earthly circumstances.

In the Christian tradition, being born of the Spirit is considered essential to salvation, and is often associated with the experience of baptism and the receiving of the Holy Spirit. It is seen as a lifelong process of growth and transformation in which the Holy Spirit continues to work in a person’s life, leading them closer to God and helping them to become more like Christ.
